The Pecan Man by Cassie Sellect was an ok read for me I loved the cover of this southern novel and the premise of the story got my attention when I saw it was described as a cross between [b:To Kill a Mockingbird|2657|To Kill a Mockingbird|Harper Lee|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1361975680s/2657.jpg|3275794]and the [b:The Help|4667024|The Help|Kathryn Stockett|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1346100365s/4667024.jpg|4717423] I had to read it.A very short novel set in 1976. A recently widowed Ora Lee Beckworth hires a homeless old blackman to help her keep her lawns mowed. Known in the area to the children as Pee-Can Man. When the police Chief's son is found stabbed to death the Pee-Can man is arrested and charged with murder.
While the plot had possibilities the writing was not strong and I just never got a sense of time or place from this southern novel. I found myself just reading through the story but never really engaging with the novel or the characters. I normally love southern novels but this one just did not work for me. It has received very good ratings and perhaps I was expecting too much from the book. An ok read but not a story that will stay with me.
