The Sisters Brothers

The Sisters Brothers - Patrick deWitt The Sister Brothers by Patrick DeWitt was shortlisted for the 2011 Man Booker Prize.

Three reasons I chose this book

1............Amazing cover
2............Set in 1851 and gold rush times
3............Shortlisted for the booker prize.

The artwork for the cover is amazing and I could not pass this book (I know I have a problem with judging a book by its cover, but am working on it).

This is an interesting book of sorts although to say it is unforgettable, gripping and heart wrenching is pushing it a bit far.

This is the story of two brothers Eli and Charlie on the road to California, following the trail of an elusive prospector, Hermann Kermit Warm. On their journey they cross paths with a lot of characters, losers, cheaters and ne'er do wells from all stripes of life.

This is quite an unusual book, when I started this novel I felt like somebody had torn out the first 70-80 pages as I just found myself dropped into the story, I thought I would find it funny but I didn’t, I thought it would be a good insight into 1850s gold rush, it wasn’t, and I thought the story would be more exciting but I just seemed to find it weird and a bit sad. I felt very sorry for Tubs the horse and I not sure what all the references to the toothbrush thing was all about.
I did finish the novel and I did find the last 80-100 pages better than the beginning.
